Discovering ‘Missing Pieces of Jigsaw’ in Evolution: New Species of Plants and Conservation

Abstract

Biodiversity loss is a global concern mainly due to human activities. Moreover, some species may be permanently lost before they are even scientifically named. Approximately 20 percent of plant species are currently unknown to science. To conserve these unknown species, the first step is taxonomy: classify them. Discovering undescribed species creates a more robust phylogenetic tree of life. It is analogous to finding missing pieces of a jigsaw. The pantropical angiosperm family Annonaceae in which I am specialized is briefly reviewed. The following genera are highlighted: Miliusa Lesch. ex A.DC., Leoheo Chaowasku, Mitrephora (Blume) Hook.f. & Thomson, Dasymaschalon (Hook.f. & Thomson) Dalla Torre & Harms, Winitia Chaowasku, Pseuduvaria Miq., Artabotrys R.Br., Orophea Blume, Phaeanthus Hook.f. & Thomson, Neo-uvaria Airy Shaw, Trivalvaria (Miq.) Miq., Dendrokingstonia Rauschert, Meiogyne Miq., Friesodielsia Steenis and Drepananthus Maingay ex Hook.f. & Thomson, with brief diagnostic features and species recently described by myself or myself and colleagues displayed. The conservation status of some of these species has been provisionally assessed and the impact of new species on conservation is demonstrated. Conservation strategies for species rated in threatened categories are suggested. Further downstream research using this fundamental taxonomic knowledge as a starting point can be collaboratively initiated.
