Potexvirus Genus Virus Infection Incidence of Grafted Cactus in Gyeonggi Province

Abstract

Grafted cactus is a major export floricultural crop in South Korea and a specialized crop in the Gyeonggi province. This experiment was conducted to investigate the virus infection status in Gyeonggi. Samples were collected from farms and analyzed using real-time PCR to detect the presence of Cactus virus X (CVX), Zygocactus virus X (ZVX), Cactus mild mottle virus (CMMoV), Opuntia virus X (OVX), Saguaro cactus virus (SCV), and Pitaya virus X (PiVX), which belong to the Potexvirus genus. In 2021, the virus detection rate was 55.0%, with 96.1% in Gymnoclaycium mihanovichii and 35.1% in Selenicereus spp. used as rootstocks. In 2022, the virus detection rate was 35.1%, with 100% Gymnoclaycium mihanovichii and 33.9% rootstock. In 2023, the virus detection rate was 59.5%, with 80.0% of Gymnoclaycium mihanovichii and 53.9% of rootstock. The rate of single infection was higher than that of co-infection, with CVX and PiVX being the main infected viruses. Therefore, it is very necessary to research for distribution of virus-free seedlings and prevention of viruses.
