Effects of the Heat Stress on Growth and Ornamental Value of Two Korean Endemic Hosta Species

Abstract

The growth and ornamental value of two Korean endemic Hosta species, H. minor (HM) and H. yingeri (HY), were investigated under heat stress treatment (35/25°C, HST) compared with the control (25/15°C, CK). The experiment was conducted in environment-controlled growth chambers set at 60% RH and 80 μmol・m-2・s-1 PPFD with a 14-hour day length for five weeks. The leaf number of both Hosta species significantly decreased under HST compared to CK. There were no significant differences in the shoot dry weight of HM between HST and CK. However, the shoot dry weight of HY under HST was 65% lower than that of CK. After five weeks under HST, the SPAD value of HM was 41.9% lower than that of the CK, and that of HY was 23.6% lower than that of the CK. L* increased significantly after 1 week in HM under HST. After five weeks, HY exhibited a significantly higher chlorosis rate, over two-thirds, accounting for 59.3% of the total, compared to no chlorosis and one-third to two-thirds under HST. In contrast, HY showed no significant differences in the degree of chlorosis.
