Abstract

Cut roses are often sensitive to water stress during storage and transportation, significantly impacting their quality and vase life. The water stress experienced by cut flowers often leads to premature wilting of petals and leaves, thereby decreasing the longevity of the roses. Hyperspectral imaging is commonly utilized as a tool to analyze plant disease, water content, and soluble solids content (SSC) in various horticultural crops. In this study, we employed hyperspectral imaging to measure water content and SSC, aiming to evaluate the postharvest quality of cut roses. The cut roses underwent wet transport (WT), dry transport (DT), air exposure (AE), and sucrose treatment to identify the reflectance wavelengths strongly related to the water status and SSC of cut roses based on HSI data. Our results showed that DT and AE treatments decreased fresh weight, maintenance of positive water balance (PWB), water content, and vase life of cut flowers compared to WT and control flowers. Although sucrose treatment improved the maintenance of PWB and the vase life of cut flowers, it increased the susceptibility of cut roses to gray mold disease. Furthermore, AE and DT treatments decreased the reflectance wavelength at 550 nm of the cut flowers. Additionally, water content, SSC, and vase life were found to be closely correlated with the reflectance wavelength at 550 nm. These findings underscore the potential of hyperspectral imaging for evaluating and screening the postharvest quality of rose flowers based on water status of cut flowers.
