Effects of Acclimation Dates on Vegetative Growth and Flowering of Cymbidium ‘Ruby Bowl’

This study was carried out to examine the effect of acclimation dates on vegetative growth and flowering to reduce time to flowering. This experiment was conducted under two treatment conditions, which included acclimation at early spring (AS) and autumn (AA). Cymbidium ‘Ruby Bowl’ seedlings were observed for three years from acclimation to flowering, and their growth and flowering characteristics were investigated during this period. As a result, the number of leaves, number of pseudobulbs, and pseudobulbs diameter increased in AS compared to AA in first year. However, in the third year, there was no significant difference in growth. On the other hand, time to flowering was found to decrease by six months in AS compared to AA. In the second year, flowers bloomed only under AS conditions, while in the third year, flowering occurred under both conditions. In the flowering characteristics of the three-year-old plants, the number of inflorescences and flowers increased under AS compared to AA. Therefore, in Korea, it is considered advantageous to acclimatize seedlings in spring rather than in autumn for the promotion of seedling growth and the reduction of the time required for flowering.
